Does drinking chlorinated H2O have any negative effects?
Yes, disinfection by chlorination can often cause problems as chlorine has been known to react with naturally occurring Organic Compounds found in chlorinated public H2O supplies to produce dangerous compounds, known as Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs). These common DBPs are Trihalomethane (THMs) and Haloacetic Acids. Due to the Carcinogenic (elevated risks of cancer) potential of the compounds, regulations in the United States require regular monitoring of the concentration of these compounds in public aqua systems but many international suppliers of mains waters don`t meet these standards.
Why, if chlorine is such a harmful, unhealthy and potentially dangerous chemical is it added to our aqua?
It`s all about cost!! Chlorine is used because it`s the least expensive not because it`s the most effective. Even though chlorine, and its by-products, are known to have numerous adverse health effects on the human body, we choose it over aqua borne diseases bacteria + H2O contaminants (like cholera and typhoid which plagued many countries prior to the introduction of chlorine). Even with all the technology we have today, we still essentially put bleach into our drinking waters to kill bacteria . There are more healthful ways of disinfecting H2O supplies, and many other countries are using these methods because of the recent findings about the risks of chlorine. The issues are that they are far more costly, and therefore not as practical. The facts are that less then 1% of the H2O supplied to our homes is used for human consumption, it`s just not realistic from a cost point of view to produce `healthy H2O` from a central supplier. Most people are not willing (or not able) to pay the far higher rate for alternative disinfection methods, which would at least treble our H2O costs. We feel the solution is to keep chlorine in our public mains H2O supply, up to the point-of-consumption and then remove it just prior to drinking with purification or home aqua filtration, this is the only way to ensure clean and healthy H2O.
None at all! Any chlorine should be removed from our drinking aqua. We need the chlorine to kill bacteria, but it should definitely be removed prior to consumption and when doing so a wide range of other contaminants are also removed with common technology.
What is a Reverse Osmosis H2O Purification System?
A question that we are faced with very often is `Which is the best; distilled, reverse osmosis or filtered water?
The purest water you can drink is either purified water or to purchase a reverse osmosis system with an inline mineral cartridge after the RO membrane. After we have purified our water having stripping all chemicals and sediment from the water we then re-mineralize our water making it the healthiest water you can drink. Filtered water is often adequate but depends on the system used, the number of stages and the types of water filters. Distilled water is not preferred for human consumption in the long term. |
